I’ve been a mom for two months now and feeling in such a nice groove with little Miss Tulsi. I’ve slowly dipped my toes back into freelance and am being very gentle about expectations for myself and time. Some days I have more time, others none, so I’m just going with the flow. Literally! It’s all about the milk flow!
This is a cropping from an illustration I just finished for a new client. I love working with new clients, and it’s fun when we can create a beautiful piece together without ever speaking to each other…email, when it works, can be the smoothest of charades. This butterfly garden is the first art I’ve made since Tulsi came. Her sweet self was the perfect inspiration, and Patrick, too. He has been going crazy with the garden, and our backyard has become the cool new hang out for the birds and butterflies and ladybugs in the hood. I have to say I’m missing the ‘labor’ of gardening this year, of digging in the dirt and smelling like dirt, but I kinda have the best of both worlds: a garden-rockstar of a husband and an awesome baby to snuggle with. Patrick hung a hammock for us, and it’s Tulsi and my new favorite place to nap to the lullaby of birdsong. Sigh.

Speaking of little birds…Tulsi is waking up and will be ready for more milk. Then play, then cuddle, then more milk, then nap, and THEN, I’ll get back to painting. XOj-mama

This is the wisest way to take it all, going with the flow.
And this butterflies and flowers scene is really peaceful, I love it!

Love the new butterfly floral illustration. The color is so sweet & effervescent. Working with a little one adds a whole new step to the process. I’ve found it’s helped me be more solid with decisions. No more time to toddle back & forth.

Jenny!! Thanks for the comment! I read Tulsi’s birth story and it is so wonderful. I admire you so much, you are a very strong woman. This piece is awesome! I know what you mean about gardening, my parents always had a garden, and there is something special about digging in the soil and physically planting a new plant. I am so happy for you and your new family. Your life is incredibly inspiring, and so natural.

hey Jill! i’m learning this quick—with time so precious, i have to go with my instincts even more. i think she’ll help my art a ton this way–i used to work pretty fast and free and have gotten tighter with age, so i’m happy for the ‘push’ to be more spontaneous again. you are a big inspiration in the workin’ mama front. you are so prolific!

you rock Jenny! So great that you already find the time to make art. I read the story of Tulsis birth only this morgning. Whooo what a trip and you managed all so very well.
I just checked the status of the package and I wonder why it has not arrived yet, cause it had been registered already at the end of May in the USA. But I hope the angel will fly in very soon :) x Sandra
