In following Julia Butterfly Hill via social media the past couple years, I've watched her continually give of her time and energy helping individuals and non-profits with their efforts to do good work in the world. Presently, Julia is challenged with health issues from Lyme Disease. We ALL need support of one kind or another at times, don't we? I was trying to think of a way to support Julia – whose story, courage, and generosity inspired me to write and illustrate Luna & Me (Christy Ottaviano Books/Henry Holt). While I don't normally sell my kids books, I thought a special sale of signed Luna & Me books might help her with medical bills. (She graciously and humbly accepted.) And, what a great way to share the story of Julia "Butterfly" and Luna with even more of our youth. :) She is a wonderful example for our kids and how they can make a difference!

Sometimes you just have to go for it. Maybe it’s not exactly how you have dreamed it up in your head, but if you jump – if you “begin anywhere” – you can go on from there.
For several years, Patrick, Tulsi and I have been *talking* about getting a dreamy VW pop-top, OR a fun-n-funky […]

I am perpetually late sending off birthday cards. Blogging is no different. It’s nearly June, and not only do I have a six-month old son who oozes sweetness, I have a new book that got its wings a couple weeks ago – Luna and Me: The True Story of a Girl Who Lived in a […]

“Baby, you are my sunny afternoon, you sprinkle magic in my heart.” – Tulsi, age 5
It’s 5:08 AM and has been over a year since I last wrote in this space. Much can happen in a year, like a 4 year old (now 5) blowing my mind nearly every day with the ways she dances […]

who makes all things new
may we receive with gentleness
and touch with hopefulness
and protect with fierceness
and love with tenderness;
and may we celebrate with gratefulness
and welcome with humbleness
and tend with gracefulness
all that you give
into our care.

We just returned from 8 days camping in the ancient Redwood Forest. I had never been in these forests […]

It feels like it has taken me a long time to gain my momentum back with my art since Tulsi was born, but I’m thankful it’s back. I am only working part-time, but I realized about 9 months ago that the “lack” of time for my art could actually be a gift. And […]

Happy New Year! I feel like I am standing in front of swinging double dutch jump ropes, trying to get the timing right (and the nerve) to jump back into blogging. I’ve been away for most of the past year except for my Facebook page and Mothering With Soul. It has been quite a full […]

Hello again! While I haven’t had energy to write in this space after long play+farm+work days, I did take some photos and wanted to share a glimpse of the magic that has filled our summer. For starters, this barefoot garden fairy in jammies during a golden rainbow sunset. And I have to point out the […]

Is it really June? Spring whizzed by and with all the travel, we found ourselves lost in the dust of garden dirt-devils and sneaky rabbits. We are usually eating out of our garden this time of the year but instead are still trying to prepare beds for transplanting starts from the greenhouse. The saving grace: […]
