I recently finished a fun project with Weekly Reader Custom Publishing for the Fragrance Foundation and the Sense of Smell Institute. It is an educational program that will be used in grade schools to learn about scents. It includes two, full color 17×22 inch classroom posters (pictured in this post) and black and white line art for student worksheets and a teacher’s manual. I especially had fun playing with the Scent Carnival concept (with hidden scents for the kids to find) and collaborating with the design team at WR.
This was my initial brainstorm for the “World of Scents” Carnival Poster:
And this was the final, approved sketch:
And some pieces of the whole without the background:

This is the final sketch for the 2nd poster and the finished art:

Since this project was fairly detailed and the client needed the option of moving elements to allow for text and/or reusing them throughout the program, I assembled the designs digitally using collage I made conventionally. A lot of work, but I think it worked well! It is sort of like playing with Colorforms.

I love how your projects are interesting and so positive, here for children!
I admire your collage, tried some recently (the first time was months ago for my Bodhi ^^) and included some parts in my illustrations but really I find it hard for “simple” pieces so I just admire how you use it for whole characters, animals, small details… and the clorful result is just great, beautiful and teaches a lot to our little ones!
And thanks for sharing the whole process :)
